The cleanliness of the neighborhood, a community effort!

The cleanliness of the neighborhood, a community effort!

The Big Spring Cleaning is fast approaching.

With the snow melting, we can already observe the waste that accumulates.

Types of pollution noticed during major cleaning activities:

    • Bags of dog feces voluntarily launched into the environment
    • Unpicked dog droppings
    • Unwanted advertising flyers near community mailboxes
    • Bulky items on the side of the streets without complying with the City of Gatineau Dtritus collection (e.g. furniture, TVs, mattresses)
    • Discharge of bulky items near streams or woodlands
    • Waste accumulation and overflow near commercial and residential dumpsters

Some citizens have carried out and still carry out great initiatives to contribute to the cleanliness of the neighborhood.

Here are two testimonials from engaged citizens:

Alexandra :

"I moved to Le Plateau a little over two years ago and I have been under the spell of our beautiful neighborhood ever since. What's wrong not to love?

I was very disappointed when I realized that on some streets, especially those with residential complexes or triplexes/duplexes, there was a huge amount of garbage on streets, sidewalks, parking lots and, especially, around community mailboxes. Some people choose not to take home, mail/advertising they don't consider important, so they decide to leave their papers there, on the ground, ready to fly. We then found ourselves with a mailbox area completely invaded by wet papers, torn everywhere and an increasingly dirty street.

Then I tried to find a solution. After talking with the city councilor and the ARP, I decided to place a recycling bin next to the community mailboxes on my street, hoping that the neighbors would react positively.

I must admit that the recycle bin has greatly helped to keep the environment cleaner. I was very happy to see that other neighbor a little further away had also placed a bin next to their mailboxes, and their streets are much more beautiful since!

There are many ways to do our part to have a cleaner and more beautiful community and make a small contribution to our environment! These papers, bottles, cans, cardboard can be recycled! We can prevent them from ending up  in our streets, our woodlands or even in the bellies of animals that share the environment with us.

We have the big cleaning fast approaching, but why not keep a clean and beautiful environment 365 days of the year? ''

Nicolas:

"I signed up with my family for the Big Cleaning of 2020 in the middle of the pandemic. The area I selected followed Moore Creek near Quatres Saisons Park. We were all surprised by the number of bags we picked up along the stream along Rue de l'été and Stratus/Cumulus!

It's been 3 years now that my family and I participate in the Plateau Big Cleaning.  I find it very important to involve children in this effort. They are our future generation.

Since I participated in the Big Cleaning of 2020, I no longer see waste on the ground in the same way.  Now, when I walk around my neighborhood or with my kids for school, I always have a bag in my pocket to pick up the trash I come across on my way. ''

Congratulations Alexandra and Nicolas for your initiatives!

April 22 will be Earth Day. If you also have initiatives to share with us, let us know so that we can share the successes of our beautiful neighborhood!

The Environment Committee would like to warmly thank all citizens who are implementing small and large initiatives to keep our neighbourhood healthy!
